Look Your Best: How to Create a Skincare Routine

How to Create a Skincare Routine

Many of us want to follow a good skincare routine, but understanding what is best for your skin is not always easy. For example, if you are prone to spots or suffer from dry patches, you may be left wondering what the best products are to use, and how often you should use them. If you are looking for a routine that is right for your skin, here's a quick guide.

Step 1: Cleanse

Cleansing is the first step in any skincare routine. It removes dirt, oil, and makeup from your skin. Make sure you use a gentle cleanser that is designed for your skin type. For example, a hydrating cleanser is best for dry skin, while a fragrance-free cleanser may be the best option for sensitive skin. Wash your face twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed.

Step 2: Exfoliate

Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells, making your skin look brighter and smoother. However, if you exfoliate too often, it may irritate your skin. For most types of skin, exfoliating twice per week is enough, however, for sensitive skin, it may be better to do so once per week. Products that are good for exfoliation often include rough particles that scrub the surface of the skin, or chemical exfoliants with ingredients like salicylic or glycolic acid.

Step 3: Tone

Toners are used to help remove any leftover dirt after cleansing, and they leave your skin feeling refreshed. Always look for a toner that suits your skin type, for example, an alcohol-free product if you have sensitivities. Apply the toner with a cotton pad and gently wipe it over your face.

Step 4: Moisturise

Moisturisers protect skin from drying out, and are beneficial even for those who have oily skin. Again, the right product is essential, as you don't want a heavy moisturiser if you are prone to excess oil. For sensitive skin, go for a product that does not have any added fragrances, as this could irritate your skin. Apply your moisturiser every morning and night after toning.

Step 5: Use Sunscreen

A daily application of sunscreen will protect you from the harmful effects of the sun, which include premature ageing, wrinkles, dark spots and more. Choose a sun lotion that is around 30 SPF, and wear it every day.

This basic skincare routine will leave you with clean, hydrated skin, but if you have problem areas that need a little more attention, you may need to use some topical products. This might include serums to tackle dark spots and wrinkles, eye creams to target puffiness, or a weekly nourishing mask for an extra boost of hydration.

Sticking to your new regime may seem a little challenging at first. But by staying with it, it will soon become second nature and your skin will thank you for it!
